History of Casino Roulette and Development of the Roulette Wheel

 

There are several theories about how the roulette was created.

One theory is that mathematician Blaise Pascal when he retired to a monastery founded roulette while he was making a small wheel in perpetual motion.

 

In another theory, French monks developed roulette to ease life of boredom in monastery.

Also there is a theory that Chinese game was introduced and propagated by Dominican monk in France.

 

If one adds up all numbers in roulette from 1 to 36, the sum is 666 which means hell or devil in the monastery, so it is difficult to ignore aforementioned theories as all hoax.

In Greek mythology a wartime game where a spinning shield hitting dagger is mentioned,

and also there is a story about Roman emperor Augustus who spun a wheel of carriage

and threw swords as a game.

The word 'roulette' is from French 'Roue' and Italian 'Ette' combined. Basically it means a small wheel.

Roulette was invented by two Frenchmen Louis and Francois Blanc, they went to Germany where this game was popular and received approval. Later on they were invited to Monaco to build a casino.

This casinosite became very successful, which later became the foundation of European Roulette.

 

Development of Roulette Wheel

 

Roulette wheel also went through a long period of development.

In early formation the single zero (0) was in red, while double zero (00) was black.

This color pattern confused players, so the color was changed to green.

Many years later as roulette game evolved Europeans created an option called En Prison.

Europe used single zero and if the winning number was zero (0), En Prison allowed

to have next option in the same amount.

First, the player can get half of the wager, or can opt to keep the wager until the next spin.

If the player guessed the right number, payout is made but if not, the player lost the game.

In 1843 at the first German casino named Spas, Francois Blanc first introduced Single Zero Wheel as a competitor to Double Zero Wheel game, which was from different part of Europe. After this, the game spread to Monte Carlo, Deauville, SanRemo and other parts of Europe.

Roulette was first introduced to America in 19th century by a Frenchman living in Louisiana,

and it is said that in some casinos around Europe, Africa and Canada

they use Single Zero Wheel. In America, South Korea and others

they are more familiar with Double Zero Wheel.
